Initially housed in the Louvre, this “Parliament of the learned” was transferred in March 1805 by Napoleon I, himself a member of the Institut, to the former Collège des Quatre-Nations.

With its half-moon facade looking out across the river Seine and its double cupola, circular on the outside and oval on the inside, the building bears witness to the extraordinary talent of its architect, Louis Le Vau.

On the cupola’s entablature, we find verse 17 of chapter XXXI of the Book of Ezekiel: “Sedebit sub umbraculo ejus in medio nationum”, (He will be seated under his shadow among the nations), in reference to the king and to cardinal Mazarin.
