DESTROYED HERITAGE

DESTROYED HERITAGE : ISSUES AROUND RECONSTRUCTION

Presented by ICOMOS France

The 20th century was marked by conflicts that led to unprecedented destruction. The immediate demand from society facing such destruction was “identical” reconstruction, as a remedy for the associated trauma. Identical reconstruction: should the concept be considered and is it to the view of the majority? What meaning should we give to the term authenticity? What lesson should we learn for 21st century destructions? Yet, another option does exist: making time stand still in order to monumentalise destruction. As such, authenticity takes on a whole new dimension and prompts us to call into question its material and spiritual relevance.
This presentation is the result of deliberation initiated by ICOMOS and ICOMOS France.

Speakers:
– Jean-François Lagneau, President of ICOMOS France, chief architect for historic monuments
– Dominique Schneider, Secretary general of ICOMOS France
